Originally released in 2010, the VideoMic Pro By Rode quickly became an industry standard on-camera shotgun microphone for professionals and enthusiasts alike. With its small form factor, superior audio quality and industry first +20db level boost, it was the perfect companion for DSLR cameras as they became the go-to device for high definition video capture.

Determined to raise the bar again in 2015, RODE’s all new VideoMic Pro will feature the acclaimed Rycote Lyre suspension system, along with an upgraded microphone capsule, improving both the physical characteristics and audio performance of the microphone.

Already implemented on the VideoMic and VideoMic GO, the Rycote Lyre suspension system is widely regarded as the best microphone shock mounting solution available. Featuring a suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic, it is far more effective at minimising unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than traditional elastic suspensions. Virtually indestructible, the Rycote Lyre will never sag, snap, wear out or require rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

Completing the upgrade is an all-new microphone capsule, giving the 2015 VideoMic Pro even higher sensitivity and lower self-noise, ensuring crystal clear audio capture over a wider dynamic range.

“The VideoMic Pro was a revelation for DSLR users the world over, making broadcast quality audio accessible to everyone at an affordable price” comments Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Sales and Marketing Director. “Now we’re taking it to another level. With the Rycote Lyre upgrade, and an upgraded capsule, it’s now even better value for such an amazing broadcast quality product.

I'm one of the unfortunate people who have to put up with a 7d's audio. I say unfortunate because Canon won't fix the auto gain control in the camera and they made it too hard for the magic lantern guys to hack the 7d. Enter the Rode Videomic pro. It is a massive improvement to the camera's inbuilt mics. It has 3 levels of gain control, is lightweight and mounts easily on your DSLR.

My situation requires the agc bypass hack for the 7d, but once that is overcome, the mic does a pretty decent job. Compared to my zoom h1, the clarity isnt quite as crisp, but syncing audio in post isnt fun either so the rode gives greater convenience. All in all a great audio upgrade for my camera.

I've used this nice piece of kit on a few shoots since receiving it two weeks ago and there are definitely pros and cons. First off, as an audio upgrade to the built in mic in my 5D - no comparison. It sounds gorgeous. Looks great. Nice suspension hides the sound of constant manual focusing. BUT it came with an exposed wire where the cable attaches (in a flimsy way) to the jack. No battery is included, so the first stuff I shot was mute (my bad) and had to be re-shot. Then I had to learn how to install a battery. This is really hard! The unit is very small & light with what feel like flimsy rubber suspenders (one came off during my first battery change - a week later) yet the cover to the battery compartment requires quite a bit of force to unlock. I felt like a guy trying to crack an egg without opposable thumbs! Another issue is the mic - it doesn't perform well with any amount of ambient noise at all. Aircon, wind, traffic. [...] Lastly: something so delicate should at the very least ship with a small hard case. I'm using my daughter's sandwich box for now - if I shoved it into my camera bag or one of my cases, who knows what I'd be taking out at the other end? Good sound. Some uses. Not the all-encompassing DSLR solution Rode claims.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro R Super Cardioid Condenser Microphone with Rycote Onboard:

Got this to replace my old broken Video Mic Pro. Rode took a bit of time to update a design, that frankly was lacking in it's original version.
This new version is much better in build quality. I would say the sound is the same... As for use, I took it for a project filming across Vietnam and it did very well in a variety of situations. Just don't forget to get the dead cat(which is different from the old version) and even if you put it on, the mic is still quite prone to wind noise.

This is the second Rodevideo mic pro I've bought. It's a great little unit, a piece of kit which is always in my camerabag. The little rubber bands fell off quite alot so I found using a dab of plastic superglue worked well to keep them on. I highly reccomend buying if you own a DSLR.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro R Super Cardioid Condenser Microphone with Rycote Onboard:

This MIC is so easy to use that I went from putting it on the top of my camera (Canon 5D) for video shooting to plugging it into my iPhone and putting it in the middle of the action.

Sound quality and capture from 20m away was excellent, sound capture up close, even better.

I am thrilled with this MIC.

I always like buying things and being happier when I use it than when I was in the shop, this is one of those things.

Good things do come in small packages and, in this case, with small price tags...

where ever the mic points sounds will erupt and be recorded in crisp quality.
The only thing would be that the actual design could be made out of hardier materials like alimunium casing.

Great sound, broad range, balanced focus and acoustic fidelity. Ideal for DSLR's especially the 5Dmk2, which has poor internal sound. Overall really well made and only 2 (non-critical) design flaws,a difficult battery hatch and the mic-jack lead isnt very tough. However it is the best value pro-mic for camera's you will find... Has become a standard.

Yes it is. A boom pole is not required, but can be handy, this all depends on what's she's doing. A pole only bring the mic closer to the actor or subject so its louder. Start with the on Camera mounted Rode microphone, then she how she goes.

                      Hi,
Can this be used with a microphone stand? If so which one should I get?

                        A:

You can use it with virtually any microphone stand. The Rode Mic has a 3/8" connector. Some microphone stands have a 3/8" thread already - a lot of 5/8" thread. If that's the case, you can easily buy an adaptor to make it a 3/8".
