The DR-40's four-track recording mode gives you several options to record, indicated by LEDs on the front of the unit. The 4-channel recording modes include:

DUAL - Record a stereo signal with a copy of that stereo signal at a lower level. This gives you a safety track you can use in case the main recording is distorted. (See next section for more info)

4CH - Record the built-in microphones along with a pair of external mics, like close-up and ambient microphones. Or record the built-in mics along with a balanced line input, such as the feed from a mixer along with the sound in the room.

OVERDUB - Play along with a recording you've already made to build up a full production or song demo

You can record up to four channels of 96kHz/24-bit audio. Mono and stereo recording is also available. Recording formats include MP3 (from 32 to 320kbps), WAV and Broadcast WAV formats.

Dual Recording Mode

Dual recording prevents clipping

Dual Recording records a second copy of your performance up to -12dB lower as a safety track. This mean if your recording gets accidentally distorted, you'll have a backup copy that isn't distorted.

Dual Recording works in addition to the peak limiting and low cut filter features which also prevent distortion.

The Dual Recording mode is perfect for recording your band live. Just set the unit to record and hit the stage without worrying about the recording getting blown out.

Locking XLR Inputs

DR-40 XLR Inputs

The DR-40 has a set of Neutrik® locking combination XLR & 1/4" inputs. These external inputs can accept balanced microphone or line inputs. The microphone preamp includes phantom power and plenty of gain for detailed recordings with condenser microphones.

The DR-40 is one of the only handheld recorders with a balanced line input, for recording the output of a console or other pro audio source. In 4-channel recording mode, you can record the output of a live console while capturing the sound of the room with the built-in microphones.

Adjustable Condenser Microphones

DR-40 Adjustable Microphones

Attached to the DR-40 are a pair of cardioid condenser microphones. The stereo microphones can be arranged in an XY recording pattern for tight stereo imaging or in an AB pattern for a more ambient recording.

When flipping the microphone orientation, the left and right channels automatically flip for correct stereo placement.

Useful Playback Features

Like most TASCAM handheld recorders, the DR-40 includes playback modes to loop a section of playback or slow it down without changing the pitch, perfect for learning new music. A built-in speaker is included for checking recording without headphones. The Level Align feature smooths out level jumps during playback to help you monitor your raw, unmastered recordings.

A stereo reverb effect is available during playback or recording. Another handy additions include a chromatic tuner and tripod mount.

I predominantly use the DR-40 for line recording from mixers. It's great for achieving an appropriate level and is very reliable, although the low frequencies aren't as rounded as other recorders I have heard.

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Handheld 4-Track Digital Audio Recorder:

I bought the product to assist with video production, record interviews and act as a note taker. Pretty happy with it. You just need to careful to hit record twice button twice to get the recorder to function.

It works best for me outdoors when I plug my Rode Reporter dynamic mic in. This eliminates wind and background noise that the on board mic's are vulnerable to.

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Handheld 4-Track Digital Audio Recorder:

I bought this over the Zoom H4N because online comparisons showed very little difference in sound recording quality (if anything, the Tascam beat the Zoom a bit at $100 less). I wasn't disappointed in the performance of this little unit. The controls require some familiarisation for someone who only used to full screen-based menu controls! The audio quality, both with internal and external mics is excellent for small budget productions. The battery life is pretty good. I had a set of Energizer Lithiums that lasted for about 40 hours of always-on production time. The only slight drawback is the build quality, which feels a little too plastic-y for my liking. I hear the Zoom feels a little more robust.

I was going to use a lapel mic with this unit but the client said No!
I was quite surprised at the quality of the audio when it came to recording the Church's Pipe Organ as it was quite Loud and thought the audio had clipped but it was really nice and clear!

This is a really microphone that I use in conjunction with my ride video mic pro and it works really well. The only thing I would like to have is, a 3.5mm input, so you don't have to buy lots of VXLR's, but overall really good!

I used the DR-40 to record a dance performance in a an auditorium with approx 200 guests in the audience, using the internal mics on tracks 1 and 2 to capture the audience noise and tap dancing, with the PA mix fed into the line input on tracks 3 and 4. The sensitivity of the built-in mics was incredible, capturing the audience applause and the performer's tap work with no noticeable hum or noise. This is a fantastic unit for the price, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for easy portable four track recording.

                          Hi Xtine,

They're both good products. I guess it comes down to current & future needs. If you only need 2 XLR inputs & that's all you'll need going forward - the DR40 is great.

If you like the idea that later down the track you can add attachments, like an extra 2 XLR inputs or specific shotgun microphones that Zoom make to suit the H5 unit - then it's a good way to go & keeps you well future proofed.

If I buy a dr 40 i would have to transfer recordings to my digital video editor via 3.5mm line out jack into 2 RCA inputs(ie no USB input). Does this mean the o/p is converted to analogue and if so do I lose much of the superior qualities of digital recording?

Are all the dr 40s clever tricks at output available for line output or only USB outputs?

Does the dr 40 with a good external mike assure considerably superior quality commentary audio to what could be obtained by using, with same external mike, a camcorder, eg Sony VX 2000E, as the recorder (separate commentery recording in suitable room for voice over dubbing)?

Yes.. USB is standard now on all system. You normally record your audio on this units, then transfer your files through usb, or but a memory card reader. The audio is exactly the same with a good microphone on your camera.. both a PCM sound recordings... If you have any further questions.. best to call our sales team during office hours.

What would be the maximum recording distance with the built in mics, I am Planning recording a wedding.
I realize that a lapel on the groom would be ideal but the portable wireless setups are out of my price range
