Wide Dynamic Range - Retain more image detail for more color grading power

Regular video cameras shoot limited dynamic range, which is why their pictures look like video. Digital cinema cameras have a much wider dynamic range and is the reason why high end television commercials and feature films look so beautiful.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera delivers a true film look because it captures a super wide dynamic range of 13 stops, so your images look truly cinematic. This means you retain all sensor data for DaVinci Resolve color grading!

Highest Quality - The technology of a digital film camera packed into a tiny size

Precision engineered with state of the art technology, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera takes all the high quality features of a professional digital cinema camera and packs them into an incredibly small size. This premium quality design features a solid magnesium alloy chassis, an MFT mount for interchangeable optics, Super 16 size sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range and high quality ProRes 422 (HQ) and lossless CinemaDNG RAW file formats! Every aspect of the image path has been totally optimized for quality!

Micro Four Thirds Lenses - Flexible lens mount for all types of quality glass

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera lets you use the most incredible range of lenses. With the Super 16 size sensor you can use a wide range of adapters for film quality Super 16 lenses, or use commonly available low cost Micro Four Thirds lenses and more. With full electronic control of your lens, you can simply point and set iris all on command! The Micro Four Thirds lens mount also gives you the flexibility to adapt to PL or other lens mounts as required.

Record to SD Cards

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera features a built in SD card recorder that captures stunning ProRes 422 (HQ) and lossless compressed CinemaDNG files to fast SDXC cards. As an open format, it's compatible with most popular NLE software so you get a digital camera that's perfectly designed for post production workflows. When you’ve finished recording you can easily mount the card straight into a laptop, ready for editing. You can even color grade direct from the card with the included DaVinci Resolve Lite! SD cards are commonly available and can be formatted for either HFS+ or exFAT, making them compatible with either Mac OS X or Windows.

Open File Format

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera records into high quality ProRes 422 (HQ) and lossless compressed CinemaDNG files so you retain fine image detail with wide dynamic range for amazing images. This means that Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is one of the few cameras to support true open file formats, so you're not locked into a strange file format that your editing software can't handle. You get two dynamic range settings, film Log or video REC709, so you can choose the right dynamic range for your project. Using DaVinci Resolve Lite you can color correct files natively or transcode them into a different file format to suit your post production workflow.

Ultra Portable Design - Lightweight and incredibly strong

Designed as the world's most compact digital film camera, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera features a lightweight, elegant design that fits into your pocket. Produced from magnesium alloy for incredible strength, it includes a high resolution LCD for precise focusing and a built in SD recorder, so you get a complete solution without the need to buy expensive accessories. That's vital in such an ultra compact design! With integrated stereo microphones you can also capture great quality sound. The removable rechargeable battery can be swapped quickly, so is perfect when you're on the run!

High Resolution Display - Crystal clear view of your work

The extremely high resolution 3.5” LCD allows you to monitor while shooting and review recorded files on the SD card. The high resolution screen makes it easy to focus accurately and lets you zoom in to 1:1 size so you focus precisely every time. Camera status displayed at the bottom of the screen shows record status, shutter angle, time lapse interval, aperture setting, ISO, battery level and record time. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera even includes built in metadata entry.

Professional Connections

The professional connections on the side include a micro HDMI out with optional overlays for easy on set monitoring. You also get a standard mini jack microphone input that's compatible with common AV style microphones, plus a mini jack headphone socket for audio monitoring using headphones. A LANC control input is included for remote operation, and you can power the camera and recharge the removable battery with the 12V DC input.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love these little cameras! I use these to shoot interviews, vlogs and general cutaways. It's a great little camera, small and handy and gives a great picture quality. Love that it shoots RAW and ProRes422.
Perfect for smaller jobs, B cam on bigger projects and for taking travelling to shoot personal videos. Love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic Camera The battery and memory limitations for the camera are somewhat annoying, but the picture quality is just astounding for the money that you're spending.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product, great customer service! Great product!
This camera is being used to multiple productions, both professional and home projects. The size is perfect for the corners that just can't fit huge rigs, and the colour grading is perfect.
Built in audio, isn't so great.
Lack of external buttons, but still gets the job done well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stunning images from a tiny camera For such a tiny camera with a small sensor, the image quality even in ProRes blows my 5D Mark III's native video out of the water. Image detail is crisp, organic and has great dynamic range for colour grading. Using FilmConvert in FCPX I'm getting beautiful results.

The camera's firmware is a work in progress and lacks some essential tools like audio meters and storage remaining to name two. Blackmagic Design are very aware of the requests for improved functionality, however, and it's only a matter of time.

The batteries are small so you will need at least a 3-5 to get you through a morning of power-conscious shooting.

64GB cards will get you between 37 and 45mins of footage in ProRes depending on frame rate. However, there is no slow motion which may be an issue for some projects.

To me, the image quality makes all the flaws and missing functionality worth bearing, however. Don't regret the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An exciting product Beautiful picture quality from such a small camera.
You'll need to buy many accessories. LCD screen is hard to see in outdoor light, so a viewfinder/loupe is necessary and adds a good extra contact point.
Hand held shots are tough without stabilised lenses.
Lots of post work required to grade pictures - but thats fun for me!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Massive power in a small package What an incredible camera!

I bought this as an introduction in to 10-bit and 12-bit cameras and their workflow (the pocket cinema camera will be able to shoot 12-bit raw very soon!). It is designed as a run & gun camera, but realistically is a camera with post-production in mind.

As of October, the BMPCC shoots 10-bit ProRes HQ. An incredible codec. Any shooters that are used to working in compressed 8-bit video land will notice the difference straight away! The dynamic range is incredible.

It is not a perfect camera. It sucks battery life like the hungry monster it is, and lacks some control that many others are used to such as ability to format/delete clips in camera and audio monitoring.

But once you learn the workarounds, this thing should me much more expensive, and much bigger, but it isn't! Yay!

I think that this camera is perfect for those looking to step up their post-production and cinematography skills beyond a standard DSLR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind blowing. I waited until I used this is a real-world scenario to write a review. Last weekend I shot a film on location with two Blackmagic Pockets and a Canon 7D as a back-up.

Our intention was to run a multi-cam set up and do cutaways with the 7D (for artistic reasons) but most of the batteries we ordered didn't arrive so we had the original battery and a couple of Hong Kong made generics. Luckily we used some Rokkor lenses, which ended up being a lot more friendly on the battery life as they don't need to draw power to focus. The Olympus M43 lenses we used stole 20% of the battery over several shots. The Minolta 24mm Rokkor extended the battery life substantially as it doesn't need to have the camera turned on the focus (we used a tape measure!). If we had been solely using the Olympus lenses (9-18mm and 45mm) we would have had to abort filming early.

I don't recommend generic batteries as the percent meter freaks out. Don't be one of those people who complain about something you have control over. I'll be using my generics as extreme circumstance back-ups and using the Nikon batteries I've ordered. There are several battery packs on the market and several more slated to come out so I will be getting one of those for on-location shoots, too.

We didn't use screen hoods as there isn't really anything out yet that was easily obtainable before filming but I would recommend getting one for outside shoots. As with every LCD-only camera. No surprises there. Inside, the screen is perfect. It's nice and clear and doesn't reflect glare from lights.

We used a fair few SD cards on the BM's but only one 8GB Compact Flash for the 7D over two days. So the BM footage is truly humungous. It looks SPECTACULAR in Final Cut. The latitude of the 'film' is so great that I could pull the sliders of the colour wheel all the way down and it didn't disappear entirely into black. I could have put another colour wheel on it and done the same again. It's really hard to over-expose the footage. We filmed in very bright situations and the footage just looks awesome. We're not professionals but our footage makes us looks pretty close!

We are getting the Atomos Ninja's to record footage to so that there is no need to swap out SD cards. We didn't buy these as a compact solution, we bought the BM as a more professional solution that we could actually afford. So accessories making the rig bigger don't faze us. If you want a compact rig just buy heaps of SD cards and batteries.

I can't really fault this as I am not a pixel peeper, I am a filmmaker. And we managed to film everything the way we wanted. Which is miles above any other camera we have used, including professional cameras such as the Sony EX-3. It's versatile, easy to use, very few cons that aren't actually cons at all. The file size is big because it's great quality. Can't wait for .raw capability to be released.
