Great Mobile Phone Stabiliser

Comments about DJI Innovations DJI Osmo Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser for Smartphones:

Fantastic piece of kit for stabilised video using your smartphone. Works well with iPhone 6S Plus and other phone tried with it. (Need to remember to turn Bluetooth off when other previously connected phones are nearby, to avoid conflict). Only shortcoming I've found is you cannot save video from DJI app without being connected to it (I've suggested they fix this). I'd prefer better manual controls for exposure, or some time lapse controls in Filmic Pro - but I'm sure these will come in later updates. Don't stand the Osmo up on the handle; it isn't balanced well enough >.<

Beautifully packaged.

Possibly the best DJI procudt yet!

Comments about DJI Innovations DJI Osmo Mobile Gimbal Stabiliser for Smartphones:

This thing is much better than expected. I also have an OSMO camera but wanted the mobile gimbal for times when it was more convenient to use the iPhone for video. Given the quality of video from the iphine6s (sufficient for my use at 4K) and the immense usefulness of the OSM Mobile, I am struggling to find uses for the OSMO camera! Using the Mobile is much easier - it connects to the phone via Bluetooth straight away (OSMO camera uses WiFi, which can take time to connect and also means you have to take your phone off wifi internet connection). It seems easier to operate and works perfectly with the phone. One important thing: definitely balance your mobile phone in the carrier BEFORE switching it on. Do this and the gimbal and stabiliser works perfectly from the get go.

  • Q:

What makes DJI Osmo Mobile better than all the other phone gimbals on the market?
Asked on 2/9/2016 by Mike from Notting Hill

      A:

What makes the Osmo Mobile better is the DJI Go mobile app. Once you connect your phone to the Osmo via Bluetooth, the app gives you full control over the camera and a couple extras to take advantage of the stabiliser.

One of those is ActiveTrack, a feature borrowed from DJI's drones, which lets you follow a subject simply by drawing a box around it with your finger. Once it locks on, the gimbal will pan and tilt automatically to keep the subject in your shot.

Another feature, this time taken from DJI's Osmo cameras, is Motion Timelapse. Instead of the static timelapse clips you can capture with other cameras, the Osmo Mobile lets you capture the passing of time while the camera tilts and pans through a scene at the places you choose.

The Osmo Mobile can also take high-resolution panoramas by snapping nine photos as it pans across a scene and then stitches the shots together. The Go app will let you live stream to YouTube and -- thanks to the stabilization -- take handheld long-exposure shots.

On top of that, you get physical controls like a joystick for panning and tilting the camera and separate record and shutter release buttons. The joystick is customizable, too, with adjustments for sensitivity as well as inverting pan and tilt, or locking it to only do one or the other. You can also just manually move the camera with your hand into position so you can set your shot just right.

A trigger on the front falls under your forefinger. Press and hold it and the camera locks position so you can raise and lower your hand while the camera stays aimed on your subject. Double-click the trigger and it centers the camera, while a triple tap switches your phone from the back camera to the front for selfies on the fly.

Overall a very impressive gimbal for your smartphone.

  • Q:

Can I replace the gimbal of the Osmo Mobile with a Zenmuse X3?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting Hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

No. The Osmo Mobile is sold as a complete unit. The gimbal is therefore non-detachable.

  • Q:

Can I zoom when using Osmo Mobile?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting Hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Yes. Pressing the trigger and moving the joystick upward and downward will control digital zoom, but this may affect image quality.

  • Q:

Are the Control Panel and trigger still the same as the Osmo?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting Hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

Yes. The Osmo Mobile uses the same handle design as the Osmo. You can use the trigger for multiple controls for both the gimbal and camera — hold it down for locking the gimbal's direction, double tap for re-centering. Unlike other Osmo cameras, tapping the trigger three times does not rotate the phone. Instead, it switches your phone from front camera to rear camera.

  • Q:

Can I add an external microphone to the 3.5mm Stereo Jack of the Osmo Mobile handle?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting Hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

No. Since the gimbal uses your phone to record video and sound, the 3.5mm Stereo Jack on the handle of Osmo Mobile does not support microphones. Instead, it's been converted into a Charging/Upgrade Port. By connecting your Osmo Mobile to an external adaptor/power bank through the Power Cable, you can charge your Osmo Mobile any time. This jack is also used the Osmo Mobile's firmware upgrades.

  • Q:

Is ActiveTrack compatible with all phones?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting Hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

No. ActiveTrack is not compatible with certain phones (i.e. iPhone 5s and iPhone 5) due to limitations within the phones.

  • Q:

Can I set the ActiveTrack speed? How fast can it move?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting Hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

No. Tracking speed cannot be set. The Osmo Mobile will adjust its movement according to the speed of the object, so you do not need to set its speed according to how you use it. The fastest it can track is the same as its Max Controllable Speed, 120°/s.

  • Q:

Can I use ActiveTrack in any operation mode i.e. Standard, Portrait, Underslung, and Flashlight?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

ActiveTrack is supported in all modes except Portrait Mode due to the limited width of the camera's view. When shooting in Portrait Mode, a fast moving subject will move out of shot easily, which will affect the final recording. As a result, ActiveTrack is disabled for Portrait Mode.

  • Q:

What is the hardware requirement of my phone when using the Osmo Mobile?
Asked on 1/9/2016 by Videoguys from Notting Hill

    1 answer

    • Staff Reviewer

      A:

The Osmo Mobile connects with a phone via Bluetooth 4.0, so Bluetooth 4.0 is required in your phone, most smart phones made after 2015 support Bluetooth 4.0.
